OCDI Takes the Fight Against Child Marriage to Schools and Communities in Kwara State
Every girl deserves the opportunity to learn, grow, dream, and build a future of her own. Yet, child marriage continues to threaten these opportunities, making collective action essential to protecting girls and securing their futures. To commemorate the 2026 International Day of the Girl Child, themed “End Child Marriage and Invest in Girls’ Rights!”, Olive Community Development Initiative (OCDI), in collaboration with the End Child Marriage Nigeria, Kwara State Chapter, and ActionAid Nigeria, with funding from Global Affairs Canada, carried out sensitization activities at Ansarul-Islam Secondary School and Tegbesun Community in Ogidi, Kwara State. At Ansarul-Islam Secondary School, teenage girls participated in a sensitization session focused on understanding child marriage, its consequences, and the role they can play in challenging the practice. The session encouraged the girls to speak up against harmful practices, understand their rights, and recognize the importance of education in shaping their futures. The engagement also emphasized that girls have a role in advocating for their rights and that their voices deserve to be heard in decisions affecting their lives. By equipping adolescents with relevant information, the activity sought to strengthen their awareness of child marriage and encourage them to contribute to efforts to end it. The outreach continued in Tegbesun Community, Ogidi, where community members were engaged on the harmful effects of child marriage and the importance of collective responsibility in addressing the practice. Discussions highlighted the influential role traditional rulers can play in promoting positive social norms, challenging harmful practices, and encouraging community support for girls’ rights and education. The community engagement reinforced the need for families, community leaders, and other stakeholders to work together to create an environment where girls can grow, learn, and pursue their aspirations without the threat of early marriage. Investing in Girls Means Protecting Their Futures Ending child marriage requires more than awareness. It demands sustained community engagement, the protection of children’s rights, access to education, and the active involvement of traditional institutions and other community stakeholders. Through initiatives like this, OCDI and its partners continue to promote awareness, encourage community action, and advocate for a future where every girl can enjoy her rights and reach her full potential. Every girl deserves a childhood, an education, and the freedom to dream. Together, we can challenge harmful practices, protect girls’ rights, and invest in a future where every girl has the opportunity to thrive. Speak up. Challenge harmful practices. Protect girls’ rights. Invest in their education and future. Together, let’s end child marriage and invest in girls’ rights!
